It is recommended that you sterilize your water stick before use. There are many means for sterilization, so you can use what is best for you. CAUTION - strong heat or direct heat will damage the plastic.  If you use hot water to sterilize, be sure to not place the water stick directly on heat or boiling water.  One means of sterilization is to heat up a water in a pot or bowl; REMOVE the pot from direct heat once it is steaming.  Place the water stick above the warm water in a strainer or some device that will keep it from having direct contact to the heat.
